We conclude this series by remembering India's nightingale.

Lata Mangeshkar, India's Nightingale. Remembering India's Gem: Sweet and Pure.

"Queen of Melody", "Nightingale of India", and "Voice of the Millennium".

Lata Mangeshkar is widely considered to have been one of the greatest and most influential singers in India.

She was born on September 28 1929 in Indore (in the present-day Indore district of Madhya Pradesh). Her father, Deenanath Mangeshkar was a Marathi and Konkani classical singer and theatre actor.

Her career started in 1942 and has spanned over seven decades. Though Lata Mangeshkar's mother tongue was Marathi, she has recorded songs for over a thousand Hindi films and has sung songs in over thirty-six regional Indian languages and foreign languages.

In 2001, in recognition of her contributions to the nation, she was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor; she is only the second female singer, after M. S. Subbulakshmi, to receive this honor.
